Verb LEVAR in Portuguese

According to Cambridge Dictionary, we could, primarily, translate “levar” as to take, to carry or to hold. However, there is a lot more we can say about this verb. Levei minha filha para a escola de manhã e a busquei às 3 horas da tarde.

Levar alguém a fazer alguma coisa Não sei o que o levou a cometer aquele crime hediondo. - I do not know what made him commit that heinous crime.

Levar uma bronca O menino desrespeitou a senhora e levou uma bronca de seu pai.. - The boy disrespected the lady and was told off by his father.

Levar tempo

O respeito e a admiração são coisas que não acontecem de um dia para o outro. Respeitar e admirar uma pessoa leva tempo.

- Respect and admiration are things that will not happen overnight. Respecting and admiring a person takes time. Levar x minutos/horas/dias… Quanto tempo leva para o resultado ficar pronto? Leva 1 dia

- How long does it take for the results to be ready? - It takes 1 day.

Levar a mal

Não leve a mal. Ela está sob muita pressão no trabalho ultimamente.

- Don’t take it the wrong way. She has been under a lot of pressure at work lately.

Levar a sério

Ele não levou a sério o que seus professores disseram sobre praticar o idioma todos os dias. Hoje, ele sente dificuldades para se expressar em português.

- He did not take it seriously what his teachers said about practicing the language every day. Today, he finds it difficult to express himself in Portuguese.

Levar desaforo para casa

Quando era criança, minha mãe me ensinou a não levar desaforo para casa. Se eu tivesse problemas na escola, deveria resolver lá mesmo.

- When I was a child, my mother taught me not to take insults home. If I had issues at work, I should sort them out right there, in school.

Levar em conta

Devemos levar em conta o que nos foi dito antes de tomarmos qualquer decisão.

- We should take into account what we were told before we make any decision.

Levar na boa

Não nos ofendemos com as brincadeiras deles. Levamos tudo numa boa. Sabíamos que só estavam brincando.

- We did not get offended by their jokes. We knew they were only playing.

Levar a cabo

A população está pedindo que o presidente leve a cabo suas promessas de ampliar o investimento na saúde pública.

- The population is asking the president to go through with his promises to increase the investment in public health.

Levar a efeito

O programa de vacina deve ser levado a efeito para garantir que as pessoas estejam protegidas contra o vírus.

- The vaccination program should be carried out to make sure people are protected against the virus.

Levar a melhor

Um senhor de 60 anos de idade acaba de levar a melhor. Ele ganhou R$ 100.000 na loteria.

- A 60-year-old man has just triumphed. He won R$ 100,000 in the lottery.

Levar vantagem

O dono da mercearia foi repreendido pela polícia por tentar levar vantagem sobre seus clientes. Ele estava tentando superfaturar sobre praticamente tudo na loja.

- The grocery store owner was reprimanded by the police for trying to take advantage of his customers. He was trying to overprice pretty much everything in the store.

Levar a vida fazendo algo

Seu Joaquim leva a vida cuidando dos animais e da fazenda com muita dedicação.

- Mr. Joaquim lives his life taking care of the animals and the farm with great dedication.

Levar a nada

Amiga, deixe essa raiva de lado. Todo esse estresse não vai te levar a nada.

- My friend, put this anger aside. All this stress will not get you anywhere.

Levar pro mal caminho

Filho, não quero você andando com o Joãozinho. Essas amizades só vão te levar para o mal caminho.

- Son, I do not want you hanging out with Joãozinho. These friendships will only lead you down the wrong path.

Levar a pensar

As atitudes dele nos levam a pensar que não está pronto para receber uma promoção.

- His attitudes lead us to think that he is not ready for a promotion.

Levar a fama

A atuação de Meryl Streep na Broadway foi o que a levou a fama.

- Meryl Streep’s Broadway performance was what brought her to fame.

Levar a vida na gaita

Alex já completou 20 anos e até agora não arrumou um emprego. Leva a vida na gaita.

- Alex is already 20 years old and, so far, he has not found a job. He runs a cool life.

Levar um fora

Ezequiel estava saindo com Valquíria há uma semana, mas ela não gostou muito dos seus maneirismos. Ele levou um fora dela por ser mal educado com o garçom.

- Ezequiel had been dating Valquíria for a week, but she did not like his mannerisms much. He got dumped by her for being rude with the waiter.

Levar a culpa

Luíz disse que era inocente. Afirmou que levou a culpa por estar no lugar errado na hora errada.

- Luiz said he was innocent. He claimed he took the blame for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Levar a ferro e fogo

Acho que não é bem assim. Você não pode levar tudo a ferro e fogo.

- I do not think that is exactly what it is. You should not take things so seriously.

Levar o troco

Ele traiu a mulher por muitos anos, mas não esperava que levaria o troco.

- He cheated on his wife for many years but he did not expect to get a payback.

Levar um pé

Depois de muitos anos de traição, ele levou um pé da esposa.

- After many years of cheating, he got dumped by his wife.

Levar fé em alguém ou algo

Ninguém levou fé nas habilidades do estagiário novo, no entanto, ele foi capaz de várias conquistas em muito pouco tempo.

Ser levado no bico (ser enganado)

Ela foi levada no bico pelo dono da mercearia. Comprou algo que realmente não precisava pelo dobro do preço.

- She was taken for a ride by the grocery store owner. She bought something she didn’t really need for double the price.

Deixar a vida me levar

Estou cansada de me preocupar com tudo. A partir de agora, vou deixar a vida me levar.

- I am tired of worrying about everything. From now on, I will go with the flow.

Deixar levar-se pela aparência

Não se deixe levar pela aparência. Quando a conhecer melhor, vai descobrir que ela é uma pessoa super legal.
